Matt Canada, currently serving as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has a rich coaching background that spans over two decades. His journey with the Steelers began when he joined as the quarterbacks coach on January 15, 2020, and later assumed the role of offensive coordinator on January 25, 2021.

In his second season, Canada played a crucial role in the development of Kenny Pickett, a first-round draft pick in 2022. Pickett took the reins as the starting quarterback for the final 12 games of the season, guiding the team to a 7-5 record during his tenure. The offense made significant strides, boasting the league’s best third-down conversion rate and ranking third in rushing yards from Weeks 10 through 18. This marked a substantial improvement compared to their initial rankings of 24th in both categories over the first eight weeks of the season.

During his initial season as offensive coordinator, Canada witnessed substantial changes in the team’s personnel. Nearly half of the players who started in Week 1 of 2021 were newcomers to the team. Notable additions included Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth, who made significant impacts. Harris set multiple rookie records for rushing and receiving, while Freiermuth set franchise records for receptions and receiving yards by a rookie tight end.

In 2020, under Canada’s guidance, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger enjoyed a productive season, completing 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,803 yards and 33 touchdowns in 15 games. Roethlisberger ranked among the NFL’s top quarterbacks in attempts, completions, and touchdowns, showcasing his proficiency in Canada’s offensive system.

Before joining the Steelers, Matt Canada had a distinguished coaching career, setting offensive school records at various institutions, including Indiana, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin, and Pittsburgh. Notably, he served as the interim head coach at the University of Maryland in 2018.

Canada’s expertise extends to his work with quarterbacks, with notable success stories like Jacoby Brissett, Chandler Harnish, Ben Chappell, Kellen Lewis, and Nathan Peterman. Under Canada’s guidance, these quarterbacks achieved remarkable statistics and garnered recognition in their respective collegiate careers.

During his tenure at Pitt in 2016, the Panthers achieved impressive offensive performance, averaging a school-record 42 points per game. The team led the nation in red-zone touchdown percentage and secured a victory against eventual national champion Clemson.

At NC State from 2013 to 2015, Canada’s offensive prowess contributed to the Wolfpack’s success, ranking third in scoring offense in the ACC in 2015 and achieving notable performances against top opponents.

Canada played a pivotal role in Wisconsin’s Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl appearance in 2012, with the Badgers excelling in rushing offense and Montee Ball winning the Doak Walker Award.

“2013, Matt Canada assumed the role of offensive coordinator at NC State, collaborating with head coach Dave Doeren. This partnership marked a reunion, as Canada had previously worked alongside Doeren at Northern Illinois in 2011. Following the 2014 season, Canada committed to a new three-year contract with NC State, a decision made shortly after his interview for the offensive coordinator position at Tennessee. However, his tenure with NC State came to an end following the conclusion of the 2015 season.”
